The Walking Dead Opening?

Hey, I was wondering if anyone who watch the series The Walking Dead could help me. I just finished watching it and suddenly realised that the very first scene in which Rick Grimes shoots the little girl has no relevance or place in the rest of the story. I was wondering if I missed something, can anyone clarify? Thanks in advance. =)
